New Lynn: builders and renovation guide

About New Lynn

New Lynn is on the Whau River at one of the narrowest points of the North Island, and grew around brick and pottery works. LynnMall opened in 1963, and since 2010 the town centre has seen large-scale medium- and high-density development, including the Merchant Quarter.

Housing: Apartments and townhouses close to the station and LynnMall, with older houses on surrounding streets, some of them post-brickworks workers' housing.

Common jobs: Townhouse and apartment fit-outs, extensions, re-roofing, bathroom and kitchen upgrades, insulation and healthy-home upgrades.

Local board: Whau Local Board (West Auckland).

Other guides in the same local board: Avondale, Blockhouse Bay

Consent and planning notes

Land near the Whau River and its tributaries can carry flood overlays, and the town centre has its own zoning for taller buildings. Check GeoMaps and ask about floor levels.
