Trades you need for new builds

A new build brings together design, engineering, groundwork, structure and a long list of finishing trades. This is the usual order they are needed.

Typical order

  1. Design and consent: Architects, designers and draughtspeople, Structural and geotechnical engineers, Kitchen designers and installers
  2. Site prep and earthworks: Earthmovers, excavation and site prep, Drainlayers
  3. Foundations and structure: Concrete and foundation contractors
  4. Roof and cladding (weathertight): Scaffolders, Roofers and spouting/gutter installers, Window and door installers, glaziers and double-glazing retrofitters
  5. Services first fix: Plumbers and gasfitters, Electricians, Heat pump, HVAC and ventilation installers
  6. Insulation and linings: Plasterers and GIB stoppers, Insulation installers
  7. Fit-out and finishes: Painters and decorators, Flooring (carpet, timber, vinyl, polished concrete)
  8. Outdoors and landscaping: Landscapers and landscape designers

Trades appear under the first stage where they are needed. Your builder sets the real sequence.
